Iqbal is a seasoned barrister with an extensive breadth of experience in financial services, dispute resolution and compliance. He received the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Chambers Africa Awards held in South Africa in 2024 after winning earlier the IFLR Africa Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.

 

Iqbal is a pioneer and founder of the offshore industry in Mauritius having played a key role in setting upand regulating that sector. He was not only the architect of offshore legislation when he served as Assistant Solicitor General at the Ministry of Justice, he also acted as the first Executive Director of the Mauritius Offshore Business Activities Authority, the former regulatory body of the offshore sector in Mauritius, and as the first Chief Executive of the Financial Services Commission of Mauritius, the regulatory body of the non-banking financial sector in Mauritius.

 

After a successful and impactful career in public service, Iqbal returned to the private bar and founded BLC Roberts and Associates, one of the leading and top-tier ranking law firms in Mauritius. During his tenure at BLC Roberts and Associates, Iqbal consolidated his reputation as an exceptional lawyer and brilliant legal mind. Iqbal is known for navigating complex, high stake cases and appears before the Supreme Court of Mauritius and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council. He has deponed as expert witness in respect of Mauritius commercial, corporate and regulatory laws before the English High Courts and the Supreme Court of Singapore.
